GI Joe: Rise of Cobra Review
Saturday, August 8. 2009
Much like Transformers, an actual review for GI Joe is somewhat pointless. It's an action movie based on a toy line and consists primarily of ultimate soldiers, ninjas, big guns, cool vehicles, hot women, and stuff getting blown up real good. If you go into it expecting those things and nothing more, you won't be disappointed. If you want a coherent storyline, a polished script, or top-notch acting, you probably missed my second sentence up there.
Since I knew what to expect, I found it enjoyable: the Joes were indeed ultimate, Snake Eyes was everything he should've been, the Steel Crusher APV and night Raven were awesome, Baroness, Scarlett, and Cover Girl held up their part of the movie, and anything that wasn't blown up was eaten by nanobots and fell over with a satisfying "crunch." There was also plenty of cheese and enough unintentionally funny moments to keep bad movie buff entertained (Cobra Commander's awkwardly long sequence of putting on his new helmet, for example). The effects weren't as amazing as what we've seen this year in Star Trek and TF2, so there's no need to see it in a state-of-the-art theater. But if you've got a local Drive-In or can catch a matinee, it's an entertaining way to kill a couple of hours.
Collector/Modeler Interest:
The Steel Crusher could be made by modifying any of the H2s on the market, and should not be too difficult. The extensive Rise of Cobra toy line is fairly accurate to the movie, but is all 1/18 scale (a possible exception is the Night Raven, but the design of the toy doesn't quite match what appeared in the movie).
