How Scaling Works

Despite what you might be led to believe, "scale" is not a variable concept: it is a fixed ratio between a master and a model. For example, the 1967 Mustang has a wheelbase of 108", while the model shown here has a wheelbase of 5.5". To calculate the scale, we divide the master by the model: 108 ÷ 5.5 = 19.6, making this car 1/19.6 scale. It works the other way, too. If we want to find out how long the wheelbase

*should* be in 1/24, we divide the master by the scale: 108 ÷ 24 = 4.5, meaning that a properly scaled 1/24 Mustang should have a wheelbase of 4.5". Thanks to the vast amount of information about full-sized cars, finding out if your model is correctly scaled or not is a pretty quick task.
