Toy Fair 2012 Day 3: Toys for All Ages
Wednesday, February 15. 2012
In addition to my usual stops, I took the opportunity this year to visit some new brands (including a couple of upcoming spotlight features).First up, for the youngest gear heads is a line of cars from Green Toys. Green Toys' isn't just a sound bite name, either: their products are made from 100% recycled milk jugs obtained, processed, and assembled in California. But what's really cool are the toys themselves. The "Race Car" (above) is their standard sized vehicle, and they also have larger (Dump Truck, Fire Truck, Flat Bed, Recycling Truck, and School Bus) and smaller sizes (Taxi, Fastback, Police Car, and Ambulance). All of them have a fun look reminiscent of the old Nylint plastic cars, but the darker colors and matte finishes make them seem a little more refined. For older kids and science fans, OWI had their Salt Water Fuel Cell Car on display. The car has a small chamber in the rear that holds the fuel, and just a small amount was needed to send the car racing around the track for over 10 minutes. I was impressed by how fast it moved: the high walls around the track weren't just for show, they were necessary to keep it from flying off the table. And finally, for older kids and adults, Guillow's was there showing off their laser-cut balsa wood aircraft kits. Guillow model airplane company is a family business that started out as Nu Craft Toys in 1926, and today boasts a wide range of airplane kits in a number of scales. I have been considering adding 1/24 aircraft to my builds for a while now, but wanted to take a look at them in person first. Having seen them here, I am now sold on the idea and will definitely be trying them out in the future. I highly recommend checking out their web site, which includes a forum where you can share your builds and get answers to any questions you may have about aircraft building.
